When you begin to draw, the first pencil that you pick up is a HB pencil. This is essential. But as you develop your skill, the need for depth, darkness or subtlety grows. That’s when pencils of various degrees are required.
Graphite Pencils are available in H and B series, where H stands for Hardness and B stands for Bold or Black.
H pencils begin at H and move up to 12 H, where the number signifies the relatively higher hardeness. Why is hardness useful in sketching? As base lines, undertones, shading.
B pencils begin at B and move upto 12B or beyond. The higher the number-the darker the pencil. B pencils are used in shading, contrasts and accentuating the perspective.
This is a basic or starter set of 6 pencils with the following degrees: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 7B, 8B
