A wash brush is often larger than a regular 12 size flat brush. As the name implies, it is used to achieve a wash effect on either paper or canvas with water color or acrylic respectively.

Wash brushes can be used to apply backgrounds on wall surfaces or large areas.

It can be also used to apply gesso on canvases.
